Anxiety and the Inner Critic: A Psychosynthesis Perspective
“Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.”
— Søren Kierkegaard
Anxiety can feel like a tightening grip — a sense of unease, restlessness, or racing thoughts. But beneath these symptoms often lies something deeper: an inner critic that judges and questions our worth. In psychosynthesis therapy, we work not just to quiet anxiety, but to understand what it’s trying to protect — and what it may be asking us to grow into.
Understanding Anxiety as a Messenger
Anxiety is often a response to vulnerable or uncomfortable feelings — shame, sadness, fear, or uncertainty. The psyche develops defense mechanisms — such as dissociation, control, or perfectionism — to avoid those feelings. These defenses can solidify into the inner critic: a voice that polices our choices and keeps us “safe” by holding us back.
A Psychosynthesis View: What’s Emerging Through Anxiety?
Psychosynthesis sees symptoms not as problems to eliminate, but as signals of the soul — asking us to grow, heal, and integrate what’s been left in the shadow. When we feel anxious, we may be on the threshold of change, reclaiming disowned parts, or stepping into new truth.
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
— Rogers
